How to import contacts from a CSV

Create a contact list, upload a CSV, map columns to Swyftreach fields and personalization variables, and keep your lists clean automatically.

Campaigns send to contact lists. You can build lists from any source (a CRM export, a data provider, LinkedIn Sales Navigator or a spreadsheet) as long as you can save it as a CSV.

Import a list

  1. Open Contact Lists and create a new list. Name it after the segment, such as "SaaS founders, US, Q4".
  2. Upload your CSV file. Comma, semicolon and tab separated files all work.
  3. Check the column matches. Common headers such as Email, First Name, Company and Icebreaker are detected for you, and a Full name column can be split into first and last name. The wizard shows how many rows have a valid email and how many are missing a first name.
  4. Review and import. Choose whether contacts already in the list are skipped or updated, and whether addresses that bounced before are left out.

Fields you can map

  • Email (required)
  • First name and last name
  • Company, job title and industry
  • Phone, website and LinkedIn URL
  • Location and state or region
  • Personalized hook: a one-line opener per contact, used by the {{personalizedHook}} variable. Columns named Icebreaker, Hook or Opener are detected automatically.

What happens automatically

  • Rows without a valid email address are skipped.
  • An email that appears more than once in the file is imported once.
  • Contacts already in the list are never duplicated. They're skipped, or updated with the file's non-blank values if you choose.
  • Addresses on Swyftreach's global bounce list are left out by default, protecting your sender reputation.
  • Contacts who bounce or unsubscribe are excluded from future sends.

Personalization variables

Mapped fields power the variables you use in sequence steps: {{firstName}}, {{lastName}}, {{company}} and {{personalizedHook}}, plus {{industry}}, {{location}}, {{state}} and {{linkedinUrl}} when you map those columns. Fill in first name and company for every row you can, because a blank variable reads awkwardly in the finished email.
